Buying a Ride on Mower

A ride on mower will be a fairly large investment for most people, usually costing at least a few thousand dollars. If you want to purchase the mower that will best suit your needs, there are a few things that will need to be considered before any money changes hands.

Size Matters

Think about the size of a ride on mower in relation to the size of the area where it will be used. As a general rule, at least half an acre will be required in order to use these machines effectively. Just because you have a large garden, you will not necessarily need a ride on mower. The garden must contain a large lawn area.

The cutting deck size is an important factor. Deck sizes will typically range from 25-32 inches for ride on mowers, anything bigger will often be referred to as a tractor. A larger deck will mean a larger blade, and the ability to complete mowing jobs quickly. It will also mean a larger machine overall. This is not always advantageous, especially if you will be working in a smaller area, or one with various obstacles such as trees, shrubs and pathways. In these instances the best ride on mower for you will have a smaller deck so that your machine will be more manoeuvrable. Remember to also consider the width of any gateways the mower will need to fit through.

Storage

Storage is important. If you are going to buy ride on mower machines, make sure you have somewhere to keep them. They cannot be left in the open and exposed to the elements without the risk of increased maintenance costs and a shorter life expectancy. Theft will be another concern. Although they may not be easy to steal, mowers will be worth a lot to anyone who manages to escape with one. At the very minimum you will want some kind of protective sheet to hide or disguise your ride on mower, as well as to shield it from the weather.

Engines and Controls

What size engine will you require? Will this have any adverse environmental consequences? What about speed and engine placement? Larger engines, along with front engine machines will generally be more powerful. A back engine will allow greater levels of visibility for the operator. Are you used to using your hands or your feet to control these machines, or do you use both? Gears and pedals will suit different users depending on what they have used before. Think about the driving position as well as leg room, turning circle and general ease of operation.

Grass Collection

Many users of these machines will want the grass to be collected automatically. Others are happy for it to remain scattered on the lawn, or for it to be mulched and then scattered. Different ride on mowers will allow for one or all of these options.

Cost

Cost is obviously an important consideration as you are going to be spending a few thousand dollars on a machine. Even a cheap ride on mower could cost over $2000. Make sure you do some research before making a decision about which machine you want to purchase, this should include reading a ride on mower review for each model you are considering. If you do not feel that you are able to afford a new machine, there is always the option of looking into used ride on mower options. Used machines will often be supplied by the same companies that offer new ones for sale. For more info about buying garden tools and machinery, check out Chainsaws For Sale today.
