If allowed to rust your tools will need to be replaced more frequently, costing you more money in the long run. Once weakened by rust, tools tend to bend or break more easily; this could interrupt a nice afternoon of gardening. A simple cleaning and drying, and perhaps a spray with lubricating oil, will prevent most rust.

The type of garden tools you decide to get will depend on the type of gardening you choose to do, and the type of soil you are working in. Soft aluminum tools will not hold up to a heavy clay soil as well as a steel tool would.
